Biology Science Current Events

Science covers a vast field. Science topics are found all over the Internet. There are also science magazines and science newspapers that tackle about science current events. Below is a latest science article about biology.

This science article is about a virulent fish virus that is found in Lake Superior for the first time. This virus is called VHSV or “Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus”. Certain researchers of the Cornell University College under the Veterinary Medicine department identify the VHSV. The doctors and researchers of the “USGS Western Fisheries Research Center” in Seattle also confirm the presence of this fish virus in Lake Superior.

This science article also states that the occurrence and the disease that is caused by the virus can lead to drastic decline of populations of stocks of fish and wild fish that are reared by aquaculture. The occurrence of the VHSV is of global concern for it is considered as 1 of the 9 fish diseases that must be reported to the “World Organization for Animal Health”.

The VHS virus was first discovered in the year 2005 in Great Lakes. It was during the time when massive amounts of fish were seen dead and floating on the lakes. In the last 5 years, a single die-off resulted to the death of about 40,000 freshwater fish in Lake Ontario within the span of 4 days. This virus had been confirmed and found in all of the fish in Great Lakes except in Lake Superior as well as in St. Lawrence and Niagara rivers along with lakes in Wisconsin, New York and Michigan. The disease can cause internal bleeding in the fish though it is not considered harmful to humans.

The virus had been found in fish from all of the Great Lakes except Superior, as well as in the Niagara and St. Lawrence rivers, and inland lakes in New York, Michigan and Wisconsin. The disease causes internal bleeding in fish, and although in the family of viruses that includes rabies, is not harmful to humans. The disease not only affects the well-being and health of populations of numerous native fish species, but it can also have a big effect in terms of trade.
